There are no performance reviews or raises for 3-5 years. I took this job to gain IT experience but have not gained any because every job title is IT Support Analyst, even if you work in the inventory area. They say they promote from within, but that will only happen if you are buddy buddy with the higher ups. The one pro I have is that management leaves you to do your work, without breathing down your neck. Amazingly, Fastenal moved through the early 1990s with virtually no long-term debt, while expanding at a rampant pace. For much of 1994, Fastenal was only in the United States, known primarily as a Midwest fastener distributor, with fewer than 350 locations and $162 million in annual sales. In September, our first branch outside of the U.S. was opened in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, with just two employees. This humble beginning set the stage for a remarkable success story.
As of today, Fastenal's presence in Canada includes more than 1,500 employees, 250 in-market locations, 7,000 vending machines, and two regional distribution centers. Thanks to these individuals and resources, Fastenal Canada accounted for over 6% of total company revenues, or $300 million, in 2018. We had racked up a lot of invoices and thru miscommunication were unaware of how much we owed.
I called the corporate side and spoke to someone who sent me all the invoices. I told her we would send 3 checks for the 3 different months we owed. I asked about sending us to collections she assured me Fastenal would not as long as we were sending in payments. If anything our account at the local stores could be out on hold. We then received a letter that we would be sent to collections if they didn't receive all the money in 10 business days. I got frustrated because the lady I spoke with was extremely rude and acted like we hadn't been sending money in and hadn't communicated at all.
When I called again today I was met with "well we didn't receive the money yesterday so you were turned over to collections" I get it people need to get paid. However when you have people from your company call to collect and they make a plan with a customer who is following thru and sending in the payments DONT threaten to send them over to collections 1 week later. We are looking for additional help in our Service department as it relates to transportation and preparing product for customers at our Minnetonka facility. Unless you do some real heinous things, you probably wont get fired. This is the kind of job that micromanages you and hassles you to get call stats everyday. You sit in a cubicle all day and make phone calls, if your phone time falls below a certain time you will get a passive aggressive email. They will treat you like a robot because thats their ideal employee.
If you have to schedule an appointment during business hours, expect to have to put up a fight for it. We were given 5 sick days and 10 vacation days but you can only use so many a quarter. Expect a typical cubicle setting and managers to be constantly watching you, waiting for you to slip up. There are no benefits for busting your butt and I felt no motivation to go above and beyond for this job because there was no reward in it.
Everyday was the same disgruntled customers that you had to call every week. Importantly, in 1981 Fastenal purchased the inventory and customer list of the fastener lines of Briese Steel in Rochester. That move spurred growth, first into La Crosse, Wisconsin, and then throughout the upper Midwest.
By the early 1980s Fastenal was operating more than 30 company-owned stores. Kierlin focused aggressively on customer service and used his financial background to keep tight control on the company's finances. It takes a lot of 'behind the scenes' support to provide the direction, training, tools, and resources our local personnel need to succeed in the field.

Regional distribution centers across North America, working with local stores to anticipate customer demand and keep product flowing when and where it's needed. Working out of Winona MN distribution center on a dedicated route was both challenging and rewarding. Winona MN was able to do more stepping outside the box then the local Fastenal stores in Phoenix or Utah distribution center.
The plan was to transfer to Utah for Arizona distribution but due to less activity on the south this was not possible. I spent 5 years at Fastenal working at the corporate office. I was basically a data analyst, but I wasn't compensated as such. You have to really give your life to meet deadlines and go above and beyond to succeed. I was constantly given more and more work without any benefits.
I worked with a fantastic team and I learned a lot from my manager, but it just isn't worth it when you consider the working conditions. You'll probably be compensated reasonably and the offices are probably clean and cool. For anyone interested in working on the actual factory floor, you should probably rethink that interest.
